Please enter the amount of money that you want to invest in a bond at this time. The face value of most bonds is $1,000 each (Par). Municipal bonds are sold in 5 bond increments ($5,000), and the other types of bonds are available in $1,000 increments. However, the minimum investment in a bond is typically $10,000.

The price you pay in the secondary market is based on many different things, including current interest rates, credit ratings, maturity and tax status. The price of a bond is expressed as a percentage of its par value. Therefore, when a bond is priced at 101.250 its value is $1,012.50 (move the decimal one place to the right). When you buy bonds, you must pay the total principal (price x number of bonds) plus accrued interest. Accrued interest is the interest that has been earned since the last interest payment date, but not yet paid to the current owner.

Based on the amount of money that you want to invest, the Yahoo! Finance Bond Screener will calculate the number of bonds that you can buy. Please note that if you decide to place an order, you will have an opportunity to change the number of bonds and see what the total cost would be.

  1. Approximately

When this box is checked, Bond Screener will determine how many bonds you can buy and then round off to the nearest bond (or multiple of 5 bonds in the case of municipal bonds).

  2. Not to exceed

Use this box when you want Bond Seach to determine the maximum number of bonds you can buy without going over the amount that you have entered.
